Honeywell Lyric T6 – Review

smart wireless thermostat

15th June 2022

Welcome to the Hometree review of the Honeywell T6 Smart Thermostat. Today we’ll walk you through this model’s installation, compatibility, design, controls and much more…

Why would you need a smart thermostat?

  • You can switch your heating on or off remotely using your smartphone from any location.
  • You will be able to monitor your heating usage in your home (some smart thermostats cleverly learn your heating routine).
  • You will learn how long it takes for your home to heat up.
  • Smart thermostats can make your life easier, keep your home warm and save you money.

The Lyric T6 smart thermostat brought to you by Honeywell is designed to replace your existing thermostat providing you with greater control of your central heating system (to learn how your central heating system works, click here to read our guide).

The T6, much like its competitor the Tado smart thermostat, creates a geo-location radius around your home, where your themostat is based. When you leave this radius it will switch your heating off and when you enter this radius, it will switch your heating on (more detail on this later).

The Lyric T6 is the first Honeywell thermostat to hit the UK with built-in support for the Apple Homekit, which allows you to control all of your smart devices (including the T6) through your iPhone and iPad using the Home app, or with voice-control using Siri.

Features of the Honeywell T6 Smart Thermostat

Installation

Setting up the T6 is pretty straightforward, although we always recommend that a heating engineer installs the thermostat because the bridge box that connects to your boiler requires mains power – this could be dangerous to do yourself.

Once the box is fully installed and the thermostat is wired into the same spot as your previous thermostat, the T6 app takes you through the simple setup process for the thermostat, which includes WiFi set up. The whole app set up process takes up to 10 minutes.

Compatibility

The smart thermostat is compatible with both combination and system boilers with gas or oil fuel types. As long as your boiler can receive on/off signals, you should be good to go.

One of the key differences between the T6 thermostat and it’s more expensive counterpart, the Honeywell Lyric T6R, is the fact that it has to be wall mounted, whereas the T6R is completely wireless and can be placed on a stand.

The good news is that you can replace your existing wall-mounted thermostat and install the T6 using the existing wires for power and control, so there’s no need to worry about installing any additional cables or drilling any new holes.

Design

15th June 2022

The Honeywell Lyric T6 boasts a modern cuboid design, resembling a large keyboard key. Its black plastic design of the thermostat blends nicely into your home. Thermostats such as the Nest offer a more futuristic look with a clean metallic finish and a circular design with what looks like a window into the future, installed on your wall. All of this aside, you still get a clean yet simple looking thermostat with the T6, which won’t look dated any time soon.

Geofencing

A geofence is a virtual perimeter for a real-world geographic area. Once you have completed the thermostat installation and WiFi setup, you can begin to set up the geofencing feature included with this thermostat.

The Honeywell app allows you to set up an exact geolocation radius around your home rather than using an automatic range. The geolocation radius uses the location services through your phone to track your location and switches on your central heating once you choose a geolocation radius. This might be the distance from your home to the train station, place of work or local supermarket, Once you leave that geolocation radius, your heating will be switched off.

Controls & Configuration

With the Honeywell T6 smart thermostat, there are two options for controlling the temperature of your home. You can either use the thermostat onboard interface (i.e. the box on your wall) or you can control your heating through the app.
While the features available on the thermostat are quite basic, the app offers a lot more functionality. The Honeywell T6 offers support for multiple users, so you won’t have to worry about another family member taking over the heating controls. Everyone in your home will be able to download the app and set up a user account, which means that your heating won’t turn off as soon as one person leaves the geolocation radius.

Schedule around your routine

Through the Honeywell app, you can enable the ‘Full Schedule Mode’, which allows you to set different temperatures at different times of day with complete flexibility. So, if you’d prefer to have a different schedule set for weekends and weekdays, this is the thermostat for you. Although, keep in mind that if you enable full schedule mode, the geolocation settings will be disabled.

15th June 2022

If full scheduling isn’t your cup of tea, Honeywell has implemented three modes for your heating: Home, Away and Sleep so that you can schedule different temperatures and settings for when, you guessed it, you’re at home, away from home, or asleep. You can configure these settings through the app. As with other smart thermostats, the Lyric T6 will learn the thermal properties of your home and how long it takes to warm up. The Optimised Start feature will switch on your central heating earlier than the time you have scheduled and begin warming your home. Your home will be toasty by the time you reach your set time, whether that is the time you get home from work, or the time you set your alarm on cold winter mornings.

The T6 also has a Holiday Mode, which lets you switch off your heating when you leave for a longer trip and automatically switches your heating back on for your return. If you are sitting on a plane and realise you haven’t switched your heating off – you have the power to switch off your heating through the app using WiFi or mobile data on your phone or tablet.

Summary

Honeywell has built an incredibly responsive and intelligent smart thermostat with the T6. While competition in the smart thermostat market is quite stiff, the Lyric T6 offers a great simple-to-use app with flexible scheduling features and the effective use of geolocation technology. One of the downsides of the thermostat is the inability to set schedules with geolocation settings enabled; it is one or the other. If you were able to have both features switched on at the same time, this would dramatically improve the product. The only other small downside is the fact that the T6 is completely wired in the same spot as your old thermostat, but if you don’t mind spending a little more cash, the T6R offers wireless functionality.

All in all, the Honeywell Lyric T6 is a great entry-level smart thermostat for any homeowner that wants to make the switch from manual or programmable thermostats to the digital age.
